Property Taxes

In Texas government loves to tax. Property taxes are restricted
to four basic taxing entities: County, School, City and special districts. In
1980 all of each county's tax assessing were consolidated into a single tax
assessing entity. One should review the taxes on any property by
reviewing the property. On line services are available for Chambers
, Galveston , Harris
, Montgomery and at The
Software Group site for Fort Bend,
Liberty, San
Jacinto, and Washington counties.
County government collect state, county and
special district taxes.
School Districts control most of our schools. Counties
and cities can have their own school, but most of those governments have elected
to get out of that highly volatile issue and encouraged districts to take over.
In Texas school districts are the some of the most expensive taxes paid by any
property owner.
City provides full
city service to all areas within its limits of incorporation. This normally
means, fire, police, water and sewer utilities. In the Houston area there are small
cities who's citizens wish to maintain control of local issues.
Special Districts include water districts, volunteer fire
departments, junior colleges, hospital districts, improvement zones, etc. In
1980, a law was passed requiring property owners to notify prospective Buyers of
Water District taxing authority and rates effecting the property.
